Seasonal Storage and Care for Magnetic Fly Screens

In most climates, magnetic fly screens earn their keep from late spring through early autumn. What you do when mosquito season ends affects whether the same curtain works next year — and whether your door frame survives adhesive removal intact.

When to take the screen down

Many owners leave screens up until the first sustained cold snap. That is fine if the mesh is not exposed to driving rain or snow through an open door. If you close the balcony door for winter and never pass through the curtain, removal reduces UV ageing, dust buildup, and accidental damage during holiday deliveries.

Renters planning a Wohnungsübergabe should document frame condition before and after adhesive removal — see our rental guide.

Cleaning before storage

Most polyester and fibreglass magnetic curtains tolerate gentle hand washing. Listing guidance often specifies 30 °C maximum and no tumble drying. Practical steps:

  • Vacuum loose pollen and dust while the curtain still hangs
  • Hand wash in lukewarm water with mild detergent; rinse thoroughly
  • Hang flat or over a clothes airer until completely dry — damp storage causes mildew
  • Do not iron magnets or Velcro strips

Never machine-wash unless the manufacturer explicitly allows it. Aggressive spinning can tear mesh or detach magnetic blocks.

Storing the curtain

  • Fold loosely or roll around a cardboard tube — avoid sharp creases on magnet lines
  • Store in a dry closet away from radiators
  • Keep Velcro strips free of lint; clogged hooks reduce next season's grip
  • Label the bag with size (e.g. 90 × 210 cm) if you own multiple units

Frame and Velcro maintenance

You can leave the adhesive Velcro loop tape on the door frame year-round if it is tidy and the landlord agrees. Replace hook-side strips on the curtain if they lose grip — many brands sell replacement tape. Warm adhesive residue with a hair dryer on low and use an adhesive remover safe for painted surfaces; test in a hidden corner first.

Inspect before reinstalling

Each spring, check for mesh tears, loose magnet stitching, and weakened Velcro. Small tears in polyester sometimes widen under summer use; fibreglass tends to fail less dramatically but can still fray at stress points. Replace rather than patch if the centre seam no longer closes — insects exploit gaps faster than most owners notice.
